What do you look for in a horse?

There are a plethora of conformation and several behavioural issues that will rule out most. Size, body type, colour, breeding can vary but conformational fundamentals need to be in place: perfectly shaped hooves, proper leg angles, straightness of movement, a strong walk that gets ‘underneath’ and a kind, smart ‘eye’ are critical along with some other characteristics of the head shape. Long neck, strong back especially through the loins and powerful shoulders for raw scope are essential.

Next would be the personality. Does the horse LOVE to jump, compete and work hard?

Passing the vet check is usually important, but thankfully now there are several safe and natural supplements and medications to help prevent joint issues - so as long as the horse is managed carefully with solid fitness program and minimize jumping high at home, most should be able to compete well into their teens.
